Rich took off work early on Friday to go with to Pete's swimming lesson. After that we went home, had some pizza, and then Rich and Pete sat down to play. On cue Pete then asked - is it almost time for bed? Amazingly it was only 6pm (Rich is usually not even home by then). So we had LOTS of time to play, and we even managed to fit in a game of Monopoly (I have to say, when I was just a wee lass, I just LOVED playing Monopoly with my uncle Mike and now I just LOVE playing it with Pete).
Saturday morning we went out on a scavenger hunt for masa harina. Some friends told me that I should try looking at the grocery in another shopping mall in the NW part of Odense. I thought it was worth a try. Well, the grocery didn't have what I was looking for but there was a very nice fish store. (The fish store in the mall by our place smells like fish - and I don't think that's a good thing.)
Friday's playgroup was at another family's *new* house. The husband is with the University, and so their new place is University housing. Its an old farmhouse, surrounded (first by big hedges) then by horse riding rings and pasture. Its not out in the country or anything, but it feels like. In their back yard was a big old apple tree. Another mother said that there is place near our city that will make your apples into cider.
Biking back home, I kinda couldn't shake apples from my brain. So yesterday Rich and Peter and I all went out on a BRWAP - bike ride with a purpose. Right near the little town we live in is an area that is quickly switching over to industrial type businesses. So we went cruising around there, looking for old farmsteads with apple trees. And just when I was thinking we weren't going to find any - Whoop - there it is.
We were detoured at first by some ripe blackberry bushes, but after that was successfully pillaged, we moved on to the apple tree. It didn't look so very tall from the road, but it was. Pete and I kept our bike helmets on while strong and brave Rich climbed on up, and shook some branches for us. And then some BIG apples came flying on down.
I tried to make an apple crisp, but I think I picked a bad web recipe - not enough topping, some of the apples underneath were a bit dry. So this morning, Rich took the baked apples from the crisp, mashed them up, and added them to Pete's pancakes. Yum. With the rest, we've decided to try cider. We don't have enough apples to go to the apple press my friend told me about - so this will have to be done at home, with whatever tools we can muster up.
And - Our friend Lone offered to watch Pete for an evening this weekend so that Rich and I could have some time alone. We don't get that opportunity very often, so we took her up on it. Plus, we were able to get a reservation at the ONE place I wanted to try while living here - Tortilla Flats (the only Mexican restaurant in town).
That's a margarita in Rich's hand. It was kind of funny, when the waitress served us our drinks I smiled a silly smile. She noticed and said - Oh, that's a full drink, it just looks small because its in the wrong glass. But I was really smiling at the lemon on the rim (I was expecting a lime).
