A weekend in Skagen

We were lucky enough to be invited to a summer house near Skagen this weekend. (Its pronounced by Americans (mostly) as Skein. I hear a hint of the "g" when a Dane says it, but I can't do that.) Skagen is the northern most TIP of Denmark's Jutland peninsula. This is where two oceans collide (check out the video), and where the sun shines at such an odd angle all day that everything looks just a bit off key.

The car trip there took about 4 hours. And when we arrived a Danish lunch was waiting for us. That's a big bowl of fresh shrimp caught by local fishermen that day. We also had herring, smoked eel with scrambled egg, and warmed leverpostej topped with bacon and mushrooms (I know, liverpaste again...but warmed up its much better).

After lunch we took the "sand worm" to the tip. You can walk there, but its deep, fine sand for a good mile. With our Pete, and this family's three kids, walking was not an option. Next door to where we parked was a bunker museum. It was already pretty late in the day so we didn't get to do that. Even now they are still finding German bunkers, some untouched, that were buried by blowing sand.

After that Rich, me, and Bierta went to the former home of two Skagen artists while Peter went with Anders and *the girls* to the Teddy Bear Museum followed by a trip to the ice cream shop. Back at the cabin (they didn't really like me using that word, I don't know why, but I couldn't help myself), he got to have an actual ice cream cone...which he's still talking about three days later.

And that was DAY 1.

The day before that we were having a solar eclipse. I don't know...does the rest of the world see what we see here? Or something similar? We had playgroup that day, so every once in a while we'd take a break to trace the sun's shadow. Peter "got it" for the most part, but I have to admit, he was more interested in playing doll house.
