A weekend at the Beach(es)

The weather for the last 4 days has been beautiful. Not knowing how long the good weather will hold out, we of course spent the weekend outside & at the beach...because when you live on an island, why wouldn't you go to the beach?

Friday we went to a "swimming" beach (lots of sand, clear water). Like all the water in DK, it was a bit cool, but Peter had fun building in the sand and seaweed. We left when the tide brought in an unpleasant number of red jellies (the stinging kid).

The next day we tried out a beach to the north of us that I had heard of. At this one, shallow water (about up to Rich's knee) extended out from shore maybe a half mile or so. This beach was good for finding crabs and other creepy crawlies.

And even though the water was relatively warm for Danish standards, the wind was strong and a bit cool, so here are the guys taking time to warm up.

Sunday, after making a pile of pancakes for breakfast (Peter's favorite, and now all homemade since I'm out of pre-packaged mix), we headed out to the southwest to the town of Faaborg. We stopped in the harbor and checked out the boats, and then we went in search of a beach. It was a rocky rocky beach, but in those rocks live crabs. A boy was fishing for them, and he was happy to let Pete try too.

What you do is...find a mussel washed up on the beach, break it in half, and attach it to your fishing rod (twine with a clothespin on the end of it, the clothespin holds the shell with mussel meat on it). Throw it in the water and the crabs grab on with their arms. These things aren't edible, but they are fun to catch.

He's back at bornhave today, after three weeks off. He wasn't happy to go, but at least he didn't cry when I left him.
