Yeah - there are a few. Who knew.
Its been another long weekend for us. Thursday was a religious holiday. And Just like Thanksgiving falling on a Thursday in the U.S. many people - including Rich - take Friday off too.
Thursday turned out to be a very nice day so we did a tour of the freshwater lakes located in the S/SW part of the island. We stopped at Arreskov Sø first. It was about a 1 to 2 kilometer hike through woods and meadow to get to the bird observation deck. It turned out to be a bit longer hike for us since we got off track a bit...and ended up in some wet woods along a stream. The good part about that though was that we got to see two different species of snake. Peter also caught a frog who decided to bloat up and play dead until we plopped him into the water.
Afer a picnic lunch at Svanninge Bakker (a spot that was high enough to see the ocean to the west), we moved on to Sorte Sø. It was a bit hard to find, but I'm glad we tried. Its basically a large open water wetland with a bottom composed of many many feet of humus - which in turn gives the water a black color. This is an uncommon sort of feature here.
I think our stop at Brændegård Sø might have been the highlight of my day though. There is a cormorant colony nesting on a small island in this lake. Their droppings are corrosive and kill the trees they nest in, so their small island is devoid of vegetation and looks like something you would only see on Animal Planet. They are also weirdly loud. This particular colony has a population of about 2500 (one of the largest colonies in northern Europe).
Last on my list of sites for the day was Nørresø. I thought the walk through the woods around the lake was 4 km, and I thought that that might be a bit long for Peter, but I was willing to try it. Well, it turns out that the walk is 6 km long. Surprisingly, Peter did a great job, very little complaining at all. In fact he would have liked to explore more, but I wanted to conserve his energy for making it back to the car.
The following day we were in the Svedborg area (best swimming hall we've been to yet). The weather was sort of OK, sort of not. But I wanted to visited the west part of Tåsinge to see Vejlen fjord. There was a nice walkway out to a bird viewing hut. Unfortunately I forgot the binoculars.
Yesterday and today have been - eeeiiihhhk. Cruddy with hints of sunlight, but a wind that cools you down a bit too much. This has been a disappointing May compared to last year. We've had some sun, but nothing like what I equate to summer weather. Ho hum. Our final guests for the year arrive this weekend and I've told them to pack lots of layers - it could be hot one minute, cold the next, then it might just hail...the combination of possibilities is almost endless and definitely unpredictable.
