Fyrtøjet and Cookies

Fyrtøjet is a kulturhus for børn located next to the HC Anderson Museum in Odense, and it was where we met this past week for playgroup Friday. Fyrtøjet translates to 'The Tinder Box' which is a very well know HC Anderson tale. Its distinguishing character is a big-eyed dog, so of course images of him were scattered around Fyrtøjet.

We had read this story before (Ridgedale library had a nicely illustrated copy), and as old tales go, its a bit on the creepy side, but that's the way we like 'em at our house.

Its hard to exactly explain the activities in the culture house - mainly because the displays are meant to jog kids imaginations and have them play how they will. I'd say the hardest thing is to get the kids to slow down and take things in. Right away they want to look and then run onto the next thing.

The first floor was a forest sort of set-up. You put on a cape (they had adult sizes too), grabbed some supplies (sword, money bag, mirror, fake food), and then headed off into the dark tunnel. There were a series of tee pees. Once was for the horse worker, one was a 'home', and one was a sorcerers. There was also a church with open casket, and a bone forest.

Then we moved on upstairs were there were a few little areas with different set ups, Pete like the wood carving one the best. There was also a big dress-up room with kid and adult medieval type costumes, wigs, shoes, and even face paints.

And lastly there was a big art room. They basically made anything in an art store available, and you got to do what you wanted for however long you wanted. Pete is enjoying art and writing more and more. I was working on present tags last night, and he sat with me for over an hour, practicing writing his friend's names (and that was his idea too).

On Saturday Rich and Pete made gingerbread cookies while I was out at a *mommy lunch*. They don't sell molasses here, but their brown sugar smells a lot like it, so Rich just melted that down. Later, as Rich was happily munching a cookie, he said "these don't have a really strong ginger flavor?"...Then he realized, he forgot to add it. Oops. Our main critic though (Pete) isn't fazed by this.
