Late August Things

The backyard August 2011.

The backyard August 2012. I've converted most of the lawn area to no mow grass. Its a little patchy on the south end due to heavy rains this spring that caused my seed to runoff, but its starting to fill in more now that the weather has cooled down and its come out of its pseudo-dormancy.  This fall I'm going to start working on my shaded woodland garden (that would be the perimeter of the backyard that's currently a bit overgrown with Virginia creeper).

Here's the native plantings in the front yard.  I watered this area only once this entire season.

A few weekends ago I expanded the north end. I'll plant there next spring once the underlying paper bags and wood chips have sufficiently smothered the grass and weeds that normally grow there. My native plants self sow, so I've got lots of extra columbine, bergamot, and asters...and more... to move into vacant spaces.

Dude. What's up with your ear?  (I found a shelf to house some of Peter's small stuff.)

From the garden. Okra (I blanched and froze it for soup later this year), and potatoes with green peppers.
