MN Dreaming

Have you noticed that we're having just a little more daylight everyday?  I have.  Garden seed and native plant catalogs are starting to arrive in both my mailbox outside and my email box inside.  Rich even started working on another greenhouse topper for our second raised bed (taking advantage of those warmer days in the last few weeks).

I think my main goal for the coming year will be to finish up the front lawn.  I've got a good amount of no mow area, and a nice, rather large native planting area.    But I need to expand both of those a bit to completely eliminate what's left of my 'old-fashioned' Kentucky blue grass lawn.  Of course I also have pile of dirt from the pipe fix earlier this month to contend with.  But that eyesore just motivates me a bit more.

Planning ahead allows me not to get off track when spring finally arrives and the nurseries and super stores are stock full of plants...that is, plants I really don't want or don't have a good spot for.

Before making solid gardening plans, check out this Audubon article on suburban lawns.  You might be inspired to try something new.
