Total Kill
For the past few months I've been preparing the backyard for a full re-seeding (killing, killing, re-killing, mowing, and raking). The north three-fourths will get a no mow native fescue blend (from Prairie Nursery por supuesto), and the south one-third will get native buffalograss which can be mowed, yet doesn't need to be watered, and can handle the foot traffic of Peter and Rich playing ball.
I 'm on a mission to convert the majority of my 0.32 acre lawn to something that is low input. No watering, no fertilizing, no mowing, with occasional weeding by hand. Extra benefits of this are providing scarce (yes, scarce) wildlife habitat and pollinator feedings sources in a suburban setting.
I am the only one in my neighborhood to do this - so far. Here is a nice article of lawn perceptions. Even though the focus is on vegetable gardens, the same can be said of people's perceptions of my no mow grass and native plantings.
Lawn vs. Food
