We met with the expat group this morning at the Lion's Den. I met two new women, both from Minnesota, and both have been in DK for around 10 years. The Lion's Den is an indoor playground - like a McDonald's play land, only much much bigger. Everything is padded and netted. There are slides, ball pits, tunnels, and rope swings - french fries, ice cream, and (thank god) coffee.
There was one VERY tall and steep slide from the third story down into a ball pit. Every kid that I saw go down it was out of control, and had, at the very least, a hint (but usually more) of fear on their face. I have a video of Pete's one-and-only time down the slide. Its not much because he was moving at the speed of lightning.
Action Shots!
Wednesday we found out that there is a spot at one of the Bornhavens (daycare/school) on our list. So, before heading over to playgroup this morning, we stopped by to check it out. It's similar to the Bornhaven that we visited in our neighborhood in that:
1. The building is comprised of a bunch of different rooms, each with doors. Groups of kids can go in a room and shut the door. I think that the teachers check on them every now and then. I hope so. I can't expect it to be St. Davids.
2. The kids just do what they want all day long. A few kids might pick one teacher to read to them. Other kids might go and color. I think there are some scheduled activities, like putting on plays, or going outside. But, overall, the Danes feel that this unstructured play is the best things for kids until age 6. I suppose that if I just think of it like a home daycare, versus what we are used to, then its fine. I can't expect it to be St. Davids.
3. Out on the playground there is a fire pit. And they use it! The Bornhaven by our house does, I expect these guys do too. Yes, fire - and children under age 6. I can't expect it to be St. Davids.
So, we are signing up and hoping it works out. The biggest concern right now is - Will the other kids accept Peter. One of the women I talked to today said that when she moved here her (first) son was 2, and it took him 6 months to start learning Danish and interacting with the Danish kids at Bornhaven. So, I think 6 months is going to be my (Pete's) timeline too.
